Bielefeld University coordinates joint project / Main phase beginsAfter a two-year preliminary phase, the six-year main phase for the most extensive joint project funded with German funds, the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CALAS), began on March 1st, 2019. uni.aktuell writes about the background, expectations and goals of the joint project:
"Latin America is confronted with crises ? from political unrest in Venezuela, the deforestation of the Amazon, violence against women (?feminicide?), the extreme divide between rich and poor, to the threat of a wall between the USA and Mexico. How do Latin American societies cope with crises? To answer this question, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the CALAS cooperative project with a total of 12 million euros in the six-year main phase starting in March."

Deutsche Welle reports on CALAS (Centre for Advanced Latinamerican Studies) that is set up in Latinamerica with significant involvement of CIASA network of German and Latin American Universities promotes a new Centre for Advanced Studies. CALAS is the mayor research project in social sciences in and for the region with German funding.

Mexican delegation comes to Bielefeld University
Building up research cooperation; planning joint study courses - Yesterday (29.06.2017), Professor Dr. Miguel Ángel Navarro Navarro, Vice-Rector of the University of Guadalajara, the second-oldest university in Mexico, headed a delegation to Bielefeld University. The reason for the visit is the joint development of a German–Latin American research centre in the social sciences and humanities: the Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS). In addition, the two universities are planning to cooperate even more strongly in research and teaching.
